The Wakefield Trojan boys’ basketball team played in the Wisner-Pilger Holiday tournament over last weekend, splitting games against Wisner-Pilger and Ponca, winning one and losing one game.

"All in all, I felt that we did a lot of good things in our two games of the holiday tournament,” said Head Coach Joe Wendte. “We played eight competitive quarters that will surely make us tougher as the middle of the season draws near. Hopefully we can get our full group back that was out with sickness and go on another run in early January. Even though we ultimately lost to Ponca in the end, we ended up winning the Wisner Tournament, which I believe is our 4th win out of the last 5 years. Our boys continue to do many great things in our games, and we will look to fix some things that we may be lacking."
The Trojans faced off against Ponca in their second game of the tournament, falling in a close 47-44 game on December 30.
The Trojans started out strong, with a 27-20 in the first half, but gave up 10 points in the second half, fourth quarter, and that was enough to overcome the Trojan lead that was built up from the first half, taking the game from the Wakefield team by three points at the final buzzer.
The five Wakefield starters were the primary scorers for the game: Cade Johnson put up 17 points from seven two-point buckets, and three of five from the free throw line. Eliseo Sarmiento was in second for total points with 10 off two three-point buckets and four from the penalty line.
Cael Johnson netted nine points, Ryan Anderson had five and Johnathan Birkley put up three points for the Trojan totals.
In the team’s first game against Wisner-Pilger’s Gators on December 28, the Trojans started off the tournament with a win, 37-28 over the host team.
The Wakefield boys got out to a good start, 37-28 in the first half – 20-11 in the first quarter, and 17-17 in the second to lead the game headed into the halftime break. Wakefield won the third quarter, 17-13, adding another four to their total, and the fourth quarter was within two, but flopped to Wakefield as well, 18-16 by the final buzzer for the game score of 69-57 and the “W” for the Trojans.
Cade Johnson couldn’t be stopped against the Gators, throwing up a 32 point game over the four quarters of play. Johnson had 10 points in the first, nine in the second, 10 in the third and went four of six from the free throw line to top his score.
Cael Johnson also had a good game, with 13 points off a big first period with six points from the field. Eliseo Sarmiento didn’t have much luck until the final period of the game where he drained nine of his 10 free throw shots and one two-point goal in the third.
Johnathan Birkley had six points, Ryan Anderson marked four and Jacob Birkley had three to finish the scoring for the Trojans.
The Trojans were scheduled to play on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Woodbury Central, and then on January 6 at Walthill, and will travel to Ponca on January 10.
