The Wakefield 14 and Under girls' softball team traveled to Hastings this past weekend to compete in the Nebraska Softball Association Class C State Tournament.

Wakefield dropped its first two games on Friday to make a long road to a championship for the remainder of the weekend.

They did manage a win Saturday only to exit the tournament with another loss on the day.

"I feel like we left some things on the field and could have played better," Wakefield coach Mike Mogus said. "Don't get me wrong, I'm very proud of these girls but I have seen them play better."

Mogus understands a team is not always at its best when it needs to be and the state tournament will point out any short-comings on a game-by-game basis.

"We did a lot of good things down there at state," Mogus said. "But you are playing the best of the best - you need to be at your best."

In the opening game on Friday, Wakefield drove through Wayne and on down the road to Hastings to play the Wayne Dirt Devils.

 Wakefield dropped the game 7-1.

Ashlyn Riewer doubled and scored the lone Wakefield run in the game.

Later Friday, Wakefield took on the York Fusion and fell by a 10-1 score.

"We just didn't play that well the first two games," Mogus said. "We certainly didn't hitt the ball very well."

Saturday morning saw the Wakefield 14's earn its first and only win in the tournament over West Point 7-6 in extra innings.

In fact, a walk off ball in play by Montse Avilla with one out in the bottom of the first extra frame scored Riewer after she was placed on second base to begin the inning.

NSA rules place the last batter from the previous inning on second base in an extra inning situation and Avilla's ground ball sent Riewer across the plate to earn the win.

Earlier in the game, Daveigh Munter-McAfee blasted a home run to pace Wakefield.

"Our bats finally came alive in this game," Mogus said. "And we actually hit the ball well in both games Saturday."

In the second and final game, Wakefield fell to the Grand Island Scorpions 10-7 to exit the tournament.

Mikkie Mogus cranked a home run in the game into a brisk breeze to put Wakefield up 3-0 in the first frame.

Isabella Andrade went 3-for-3 in the game and scored three runs while Alli Brown went 2-for-4.

Unfortunately, the Wakefield 14's lead didn't last and the Scorpions came back to win the game and sideline Wakefield.

"These girls are some great girls," Mogus said. "They are very coachable and very fun to be around - they're just good kids."
