The cast of Romeo and Juliet

There was some BIG drama happening at the Little Red Hen Theatre this past weekend, and it came in a bunch of little packages.

Local young thespians, from grades kindergarten through the eighth-grade, took to the stage on Saturday, June 15, to show off their dramatic skills in a wrap-up performance of the Little Red Hen Theatre’s "Drama Camp".

The week-long camp served over thirty students who explored creativity, learned basic drama skills, and had blast!

“The ultimate goal of our educational experiences were to give the students in our community the skills and confidence to explore their creativity and learn to express themselves with confidence," LRHT manager, T. Adam Goos said. "It is a special thing for young people to grasp the fun of theatre."

The students worked over the course of the week with youth theatre specialist Scott Mead, who teaches full time for Omaha Public Schools.

Local drama student Ashlyn Catalan came on board as an assistant teacher for this year Drama Camp helping Mead move the students through activities and exercises as the students got ready for their final performance.

On Saturday, the younger students presented a dramatic retelling of "The Three Little Pigs", while the older students performed a twenty-minute adaption of Shakespeare’s "Romeo & Juliet".

The camp was presented free of charge for local students, thanks to support from the Wakefield Community Foundation and the Wakefield Lion’s Club.

With Drama Camp completed, the theatre is turning all its attention on getting ready for its upcoming show, "SHREK THE MUSICAL".

The show will be presented over four performances, July 15 – 18.

A Broadway musical re-telling of the classic film, Shrek is the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue.

The Little Red Hen Theatre’s production features over 40 actors from the area, aged six to over 65.

Little Red Hen Theatre patrons can reserve seats for the performances now. Tickets will go on sale for the public on July 2nd. For more information on what is happening at the theatre, visit www.littleredhentheatre.com.
