Wakefield Softball set for all year
Last year, Wakefield softball mentor Mike Mogus was not sure whether his teams should be on the field.
Not because they didn't have talent and couldn't compete, but because he just didn't know if it was the right thing to do under the conditions we were all under early last summer.
2021 has arrived and Mike Mogus is positive his teams should be on the field and they have a schedule to get them ready for anything.
After a couple of opening wins over South Sioux City, Mogus took his troops to Crete for a tournament against club teams and who's who in Class B.
"We're not going to get better unless we play better teams," Mogus said. "We have good teams around here but we play them all the time - we need to go play a bunch of games while we can."
In the opening game of the tournament Wakefield lost to the Chaos Outlaws from Lincoln, 11-5.
Alex Arenas and Maddie Mogus each went one-for-two in the game with Aishah Valenzuela, Destiny Helzer, Mogus and Madison Borg crossing the plate.
In the second game, Wakefield outlasted Central City 8-3.
"We have some girls playing who haven't played for a while," Mogus said. "They're going to be great - but they have a learning curve and are catching up - it's great they came out to play."
Wakefield scored six runs in the first inning, and tacked on single runs in the second and third.
In the next game in Crete, Wakefield played the Garland Gunslingers from Malcolm and ran away with a 14-1 win in two at-bats for Wakefield.
As it should be, every single player on the team scored in the game at least once.
From there, the Wakefield girls lost to Ralston 11-5 in the tournament to finish the weekend.
They came back to northeast Nebraska to play Osmond and fell in a tough game, 3-2.
The Lady Trojans scored a couple of runs in the third by Megan Meyer and Helzer, but it wasn't enough.
