The Wakefield Trojans went 1-2 over the course of the past week, and unfortunately saw their 2024 season come to an end with a loss to the O’Neill Eagles in subdistrict play on Monday, Oct. 28 in Pierce.
In their final game of the season, the Trojans took on the Eagles in the first round of the 2024 Class C1 Subdistrict 4 tournament.
As the five-seed in a five team bracket, the Trojans had a tough road ahead of them if they wanted to keep their season alive, and that road began with the O’Neill Eagles.
Unfortunately, it also ended with the Eagles.
While the Trojans gave it their all, the Eagles were able to gain some momentum early on and never slow down.
Despite their best efforts, the end result of the match was a 3-0 sweep in favor of O’Neill. This win advanced the Eagles to play the Bluejays later that night and simultaneously ended the Lady Trojans 2024 season.
Prior to their season-ending loss to O’Neill, the Trojans were able to get one final win under their belt as they finished out the regular season by traveling to Homer for a triangular featuring the Homer Knights and WInnebago Indians on Thursday, Oct. 24.
At the Homer Triangular, the Trojans managed to snag one win along with one loss. .
The night began with a matchup against the home team, the Homer Knights. In this best-of-three match, the Trojans fought hard and it was clear from the get-go that neither team wanted to leave the court with a loss.
Unfortunately, Homer was able to hold off the Trojans to win set one 25-23. After a defeating set one loss, the Trojans just didn’t have what it took to get the win in set two, and Homer was able to walk away with the two-set sweep.
Fortunately for the Trojans, the taste of defeat didn’t last long.
Immediately after their loss, the Torjans took on the Winnebago Indians. While Winnebago had fresh legs on the court, the Trojans had more will to win, and dominated set one 25-12 to set the tone for the match.
Winnebago fought back in set two, and nearly had enough in the tank to force a set three, but Wakefield closed the doors on the Indians with a 25-20 set two victory to earn the sweep and take home a win in its final regular-season game of the year.
Unfortunately, while the Trojans were able to get one last victory before their season ended, the 2024 Wakefield volleyball season officially came to a close with their loss to O’Neill on Monday, OCt. 28.
The Trojans finished with a record of 12-19 and will see two seniors graduate in May of 2025. Isabella Andrade and Alli Brown were the lone seniors on the 2024 Trojans team. Both served as team captains for their final season at Wakefield.
