Lady Trojans celebrating a kill

The Wakefield Lady Trojans had a full week of competition with four games spanning from Tuesday, Oct. 15 to Saturday, Oct. 19.

The Lady Trojans finished out their week of competition with two matches in pool play of the East Husker Conference Volleyball Tournament against the Tekamah-Herman Tigers and the Lyons-Decatur Northeast (LDNE) Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 19.

In these best-of-three matchups, the Trojans competed well against their opponents in both games, but only found a way to come on top in one of the two matches.

Against the Tekamah-Herman Tigers, the Lady Trojans forcefully won set two 25-19 after losing set one. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to get the best of Wakefield in set three 25-23 to earn the victory.

Despite their loss against the Tigers, the Trojans bounced back well against the Cougars of LDNE. With two 25-19 set victories, the Trojans earned a sweep over the Cougars to finish out their time in the East Husker Conference Tournament.

Prior to going 1-1 in pool play, the Lady Trojans took on Howells-Dodge (H-D) in the first round of the East Husker Conference Tournament.

Once again, this contest was a best-of-three match. The Trojans entered the contest as the 11-seed, and as the underdogs, they needed a solid start if they hoped to topple the Jaguars.

Unfortunately, a nine-point set one loss flattened the hearts of the Trojans. In set two, Wakefield did its best to force a set three, but after an incredible back-and-forth set, it was H-D who came out on top 31-29 to earn the sweep and send Wakefield to pool play.

Finally, to begin their week, the Lady Trojans stayed home to take on the Elkhorn Valley Falcons on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Although the Falcons came into the contest with a significantly better record than the Trojans, it was Wakefield who showed incredible fight and grit throughout the contest.

The Falcons were able to best the Trojans in set one 27-25, but Wakefield refused to go away. In set two, the Lady Trojans battled back and forth with the Falcons to the very end. Unfortunately, set two also resulted in a loss for the Trojans, which seemed to take all of the fight out of Wakefield.

Set three was won by the Falcons 25-14, which earned Elkhorn Valley the sweep over Wakefield.

The Trojans efforts this week brought their season record to 11-17. After a tough week of conference play, Wakefield will finish out its regular season with a trip to Homer on Thursday, Oct. 24 to take on the Homer Knights and Winnebago Indians in triangular play.

After the conclusion of the Homer Triangular, the Lady Trojans will get a few days off before they kick off their postseason journey on Monday, Oct. 28 against an opponent yet-to-be-determined.
