The Wakefield Trojans volleyball squad kicked off its season on Thursday, Aug. 29 against the Plainview Pirates in a contest that went down to the wire.

In front of their home crowd, the Trojans fought until the bitter end against the Pirates, who managed to get the best of the Trojans in five sets to walk away victorious.

Although the Pirates got the last laugh, the Trojans managed to put up some impressive numbers and dominate in multiple sets, which made for an exciting contest all the way to the end.

To kick off the night, set number one was owned by the Trojans, who came to play in front of their family and friends. After getting a few intense rallies, the Trojans managed a 25-16 victory. This set made it seem like the Trojans were in for an easy night, but Plainview had other plans.

The Pirates fought back hard in set two to claw their way to a 25-22 victory before edging out the Trojans again in set three 25-21 to take a two-sets-to-one lead and completely flip momentum back in their favor.

Fortunately for Trojans fans, Wakefield still had some fight left in the tank.

Set number four was nearly an exact reflection of set number one. The Trojans managed to bring the intensity with their backs against the wall to get another dominating 25-15 set victory and force a set number five.

Unfortunately, despite the Trojans newfound momentum, Plainview managed to settle back in and shut down Wakefield’s hopes of a comeback with a 15-12 victory in set five.

With this loss, the Trojans record now sits at 0-1 on the season.

Leading the way for the Trojans in the tough loss was the senior Alli Brown, who finished the evening with a team-leading 19 kills as well as 21 digs.

The duo of Boston Brown and Montserrat Avila also contributed heavily to the success of Wakefield’s attack game, as Brown finished with 19 assists and Avila ended with 17.

Another noticeable performance for the Trojans came from the service line, where Ashlyn Riewer finished the night with four aces.

After starting their season with a tough loss, the Lady Trojans will continue searching for their first victory of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 3 against Battle Creek in Wakefield.
