Daveigh, Alli, Katie, Ashlyn, and Mikkie celebrating their come from behind win over West Point

The Wakefield Trojans 18U softball team got its season out to a hot start with wins this past week on Tuesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 30.

In their most recent contest, the Trojans pulled off a close victory against West Point-Beemer (WPB) in a game that came down to the wire.

The contest got out to a rough start for the Trojans, who quickly found themselves with their backs against the wall after WPB plated two runs in the top half of the first inning to jump out to an early lead.

The Trojans showed their fight, however, and slowly began their comeback with a run in the bottom of the second to bring themselves back within one.

Unfortunately, WPB was able to respond immediately with two runs in the top of the third to make the score 4-1 in favor of WPB.

Despite playing from behind the entire night, the Trojans continued to fight until the very last inning, which is when things began to click offensively.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth and the game on the line, Daveigh Munter-McAfee came up huge with a double to right field to score two runs and tie the ballgame up at 4-4.

The very next batter, Mikkie Mogus, connected on a fastball to bring Munter-McAfee in from second and give the Trojans the victory.

Earning the victory on the mound for the Trojans was Alli Brown, who ended the game giving up three earned runs on just four hits, while striking out ten batters. The tight victory improved the Trojans to 2-0 on the season.

Prior to their close victory over WBP, the Wakefield squad began their season with a dominating victory over Randolph on the road on Thursday, May 30.

Unlike their contest against WPB, the Trojans had command of this game early on. After plating two runs in the first inning, Wakefield continued to pile on the runs.

Three more runs were scored in the second inning and were followed by another three runs in the third, and four more in the fourth to grow their lead to 12-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Randolph was unable to score any in the bottom of the fourth, which ended the game early due to the mercy rule. This gave the Trojans their first victory of the season to improve their record to 1-0.

Once again, it was Brown who started on the mound for the Trojans. In this victory, Brown threw a no-hitter and recorded ten strikeouts. The lone baserunner of the game for Randolph reached due to an error, which made Brown’s first start of the season almost perfect.

Offensively, all but two Wakefield players crossed the plate during their rout of Randolph, which showcased the Trojans well-rounded ability as a team early on in the season.

With a record of 2-0, the Wakefield squad will continue its season on Tuesday, June 4 with an away game against WBP before traveling once again on Tuesday, June 11 to take on the Hartington Penguins.
