The Wakefield Trojans junior and senior legion baseball teams travelled to Wayne on Friday, May 24 for two tough contests against one of the best legion teams in Northeast Nebraska.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, neither team was able to pull out the victory.

The night began with the junior contest, where the Trojans fought hard, but couldn’t quite get the job done.

Wakefield got off to a solid start on offense, with Jacob Birkely drawing a walk before finding his way around the baselines to get the Wakefield juniors out to an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, however, Wayne would respond with a run of their own. And after plating two more in the bottom of the second, the Wayne juniors wouldn’t trail again for the remainder of the contest.

While the Trojans were able to get a few more runners on base throughout the remainder of the game, the juniors couldn’t find a way to get another run across the plate, and Wayne cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Wakefield juniors.

Following the conclusion of the juniors’ game, both teams’ senior squads stepped onto the diamond to face off.

Once again, the Trojans got off to a solid start. After Cade Johnson drew a walk as the lead-off man, both Mason Lamprecht and Jesse Lundahl managed to get on base to load the bases in the top of the first.

Unfortunately, the next two batters for the Trojans would strike out to end the inning, resulting in no runs on the board for Wakefield heading into the bottom of the first.

After their first inning, the Trojans got cold. Over the next two innings, the Trojans had six batters step up to the plate, five of which ended up striking out.

While the Trojans struggled at the plate, the Wayne squad took advantage. At the end of the second, the Wayne seniors led 6-0 over Wakefield.

Despite the Trojans best efforts to mount a comeback, the Wakefield squad just didn’t have an answer for the high-powered offense of Wayne. In the bottom of the fourth, Wayne managed to put up four more runs to take a 10-0 lead.

After the Trojans were unable to score any runs in the top of the fifth, the game ended due to the run-rule, which gave the Trojans their second loss of the evening.

Despite the loss, the Trojans had every single one of their first seven batters get on base at some point throughout the contest, and had the bases loaded twice against Wayne. While the Trojans couldn’t capitalize, there were some positives to be found in the early-season loss to a solid Wayne squad.
