With the winter season slowly fading away, the Wakefield Trojans golf team is gearing up to compete in Class C during the 2024 boys golf season, with their season beginning on Tuesday, April 2 at the Clarkson-Leigh Invite.
This year the Trojans will have four athletes out for the team, including one senior. Jack Pommer, a senior at Wakefield High School, will be joined by three sophomores to fill out the 2024 Trojan golf team. Jacob Birkley, Madelyn Trenhaile, and Lane Fischer will join Pommer to complete the squad.
The Trojans will be led by Head Coach Joe Wendte, who is entering his fourth season.
Both Pommer and Birkley are returning members of the golf team, giving the team some leadership going into this season.
While the Trojans have just four athletes competing in the 2024 season, four is just enough to fill out a team at invites. This means the Trojans will have the opportunity to win as a team at invites throughout the season, rather than just playing for individual medals.
With boys’ golf season only lasting from late March through May 22, there’s not a lot of time to fool around. Even though the team has already begun practice, their first meet isn’t until April 2. This gives the athletes just over a month of competition during the season.
To go along with the short season, this time of the year in school is also hectic, which makes concentrating on a success that much more difficult. With the combination of prom and graduation sitting right in the middle of the season, it’s easy to get distracted from the game.
“It does get very hectic trying to mix sports and school in April,” said Wendte. “We are just trying to improve a little every practice. We try to teach them the importance of every rep and focus on every single shot.”
With such a short season, it’s important to set goals early on.
“We just want to work on ourselves at this point in the season,” said Wendte. “We tell them to try and better your own score, because that is really the only thing you can control.”
The Trojans will kick off their season on Tuesday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the Clarkson-Leigh Invite against the Patriots and numerous other schools from the area.
