Wakefield High School announced today its decision to join the East Husker Conference, effective for the 2024-2025 school year. This marks a significant shift for the Trojans, who have been members of the Lewis & Clark Conference for over two decades.
"We are excited to announce this new chapter for Wakefield High School," said Matt Brenn, principal and activities director of Wakefield High School. "The East Husker Conference provides a strong competitive environment and a better geographical fit for our student-athletes. We believe this move will enhance their overall experience and allow them to compete at the highest level."
The decision to switch conferences was made after careful consideration by school administration, coaches, and the board of education.
The transition to the East Husker Conference will involve adjustments for scheduling and transportation. However, school officials are confident that the benefits outweigh the challenges and that the move will ultimately be positive for Wakefield athletics/activities and the community.
This will also mean some both new and old opponents found throughout the conference, the current roster of the East Husker Conference is as follows:

Though it may be a new district Wakefield already participates in many of the events found in the conference making it a logical fit:

Girls Wrestling: West Point-Beemer Tournament, North Bend Central Tournament, Madison(Dual)
Track: West Point-Beemer Invite, Lyons-Decatur NE Invite, Wisner-Pilger Invite
Golf: Quadrangular with LDNE, Pender and Clarkson-Leigh, Pender Invite
East Husker Conference also has many activities some of which Wakefield annually excels in such as Art, Choir, and Play Production as well as Band, Speech, and Quiz Bowl.
