The Wakefield Lady Trojans improved their record to 20-7 with wins over Tri County Northeast and Elkhorn Valley this past week, with one game at home and one on the road.
The week started off with a contest between the Lady Trojans and the Falcons of Elkhorn Valley in Tilden on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
While the Falcons entered the contest with ten losses on the season, they also came in with 16 wins, and have a very tough schedule to back them up. If the Trojans wanted to win, they knew it wouldn’t be easy.
Wakefield came off the bus ready to go, earning a victory in a hard-fought set number one 25-21, before blowing E-V out of the water in set two 25-15.
After a big second set, Wakefield finally showed they were human with a rough third set, losing 25-14, giving the Falcons a chance to come back and make it a ballgame. But fortunately for Trojan fans, Wakefield would use set three as a wake-up call, and close out the game in set four with a 25-20 victory.
Offensively, Daveigh Munter-McAfee put on a clinic for the Trojans with 30 kills, followed by Alli Brown with 12, Sierra Kaufman with three, Isabella Andrade with two, and Boston Brown and Jordan Metzler with one each.
Defensively, Alli Brown and Kaufman each put up two blocks, followed by Munter-McAfee and Metzler, each with one.
Katie Borg led the in digs, with 27, followed by Munter-McAfee with 17, Alli Brown with 14, Andrade with 13, Metzler with ten and Boston Brown with one.
After a day-long break, the Trojans got to stay home for a matchup against the Tri County Northeast Wolfpack on Thursday, Oct. 12.
TCNE entered the game having won two of their last three games and tried to use that momentum to knock off the higher-ranked Trojans. But the Trojans would use home court to their advantage and came out hungry for a victory.
The Trojans took care of the Wolfpack in three sets, winning by scores of 25-16, 25-12, and 25-18 for their 20th victory of the season.
Munter-McAfee led the team in kills yet again with 16, followed by Alli Brown with 13, Andrade with three, Kaufman and Boston Brown with two, and Metzler with one.
Metzler shone above the rest of the team in assists, rattling off 32 for the squad, followed only by Katie Borg, who put up four of her own.
On Monday, Oct. 16 the Trojans began their play in the Lewis and Clark Conference tournament play. Because of their success in the regular season, the Trojans received a high seed, meaning they needed just two wins to advance to the championship match.
The Trojans began their night against Plainview, a team that’s shown some fight against Wakefield, taking them all the way to five sets in Wakefield’s very first game of the season.
This time around, however, it would be all Wakefield. In this match, it was best-of-three, as only the semifinals and finals are best-of-five in the Lewis and Clark tournament. The first set was what most people expected, Plainview nipping at the heels of the Trojans before Wakefield was able to scrape away a victory 25-23. The second set is where Wakefield was able to dominate, as they got out to an early lead and showed no mercy on their way to a dominant 25-13 set win for the sweep in the match, putting them one win away from the conference championship game.
In their way was a solid 16-10 Bloomfield Bees team, who wasn’t going to let this be an easy win for the Trojans. Bloomfield came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, taking advantage of a tired Wakefield team to win 25-21, putting the pressure on Wakefield to create their own destiny.
As the old saying goes, pressure makes diamonds, and that saying would hold true as Wakefield was able to rise above the pressure of being down 0-1 in sets and capture a victory in set two to even up the match 1-1. After the victory, Wakefield was able to settle down and win the next two sets 25-22 and 25-18 to advance to the conference championship against the Wynot Bluedevils on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
The Trojans and Bluedevils have faced off once this year, with Wynot coming out on top two sets to none.
In the semifinal victory to get them to the championship game, Munter-McAfee put on a clinic with 20 kills, followed by Alli Brown with eight, Boston Brown with seven, Metzler with four, Andrade with three and Kaufman with one.
Borg led the squad in the digs column with 15, with Munter-McAfee right on her heels with 14. Those two were followed by Alli Brown with 11, Metzler with nine, Andrade with eight, Boston Brown with four, and Kaufman with two. Metzler also led the team in assists with 41.
Following the conclusion of the conference championship, Wakefield now has just two regular season games left, with two games at home on Thursday, Oct. 19 against Winnebago and Homer.
