The Wakefield Trojan football team hosted the Plainview Pirates for their first game of the season at Gardner Stadium, and following a rough first quarter, the Trojans fell to the Pirates 48-12.
Plainview was able to put up 28 points in the first quarter to open the gap at 35-0 at the halftime break. The visiting team added another 13 before the fourth quarter when Wakefield was able to get on the board with 12 points.
“We ran into a darn good football team in Plainview and we found out we have a lot of things to fix if we want to be a good football team,” said Coach Matt Hassler. “We have two options, we can feel sorry for ourselves or we can get back to work. That will be up to the fellas to decide this week.”
The Trojans churned out 43 plays, compared to the Pirate 55, but had just eight first downs compared to the visiting team’s 22. Both teams had just a few penalties in the quick moving game, with the Trojans back only 25 yards throughout the entire series.
Adrian Flores had five carries for 66 yards to lead the team’s rushing, Cael Johnson also marked five for 18 yards, and Jacob Borg marked five carries for 17 yards.
Quarterback Jacob Borg completed four of seven throws, netting 70 yards to his receivers, with one touchdown and one interception.
Cael Johnson pulled in two of Borg’s throws for 31 yards, Mason Lamprecht had one for a 30-yard gain and Jesse Lundahl had one nine yard catch for a touchdown.
Leading Tacklers were Isaac Walsh with 7 solo/8 assist; Adrian Flores 9 solo/2 assisted; Anthony Valenzuela 4 solo/7 assisted; Ruben Vega 7 solo/3 assisted and Jason Lopez (FR).
The Trojans will be on the road to Bancroft-Rosalie (Bancroft) for their first away game of the season this Friday, Sept. 1 for an afternoon game at 3:00 p.m., and will then travel to face their perennial rival the Pender Pendragons on Friday, Sept. 8th at 7:00 p.m.
“B-R won their opener and is another solid football team,” said Hassler. “Every week is going to be a dog fight, I’m anxious to see how we will respond.”
