The annual Mid Summer Classic baseball tournament was held across all three baseball fields at Graves Park starting on Friday, June 23rd. Starting in the early evening on Friday mother nature threw a curveball as a storm developed over the tournament bringing some much needed rain, but halting play for the rest of the day. Through the efforts of many volunteers Saturday morning the fields were clear of water and dry enough for the tournament to resume with only a couple of hours delay.
This year marks another champion 8u team as Wakefield beat both the Tri County Wolfpack baseball team and played a close game with Pender before the defense halted the Pendragon offense in the later innings to claim the championship.
The didgets first game was called in favor of Ashland halfway through as the rain came down, but their second game versus O’Neill went better though they were unable to come away with a win ending their tournament run.
Wakefield’s Broncos first game was postponed to Saturday morning and started out promising with a 5-4 lead before Vermillion got their bats going and ended up routing Wakefield. Their second game versus the Thunder went very well despite having Bryan Godinez pitching and Colt Johnson catching, positions they don’t normally play. But due to their first loss they needed help from Vermillion to keep their tournament alive which they didn’t get ending their run.
