The Wakefield Boy Scout Troop #172, traveled to Ponca State Park over the weekend of February 24-26 for a winter camp out.
The group modified the west shelter, using tarps to cover the openings and make a bit warmer area to sleep and camp in.
Scoutmaster Ed Haglund said that the Scouts cut a lot of firewood from downed trees surrounding the shelter. Activities included ice fishing, wood cutting, and sledding. The boys also played card games and outside games in the evenings.
The Scouts worked on rank advancement activities such as cooking, tying lashings and knife and axe safety. Seven Scouts and four leaders attended.
Earlier this winter, Four Scouts earned rank advancements:
Jaxon Benscoter earned Life, Tucker Raveling earned Tenderfoot, and Virgil Ekberg and Drew Peatrowski earned Scout rank.
The next Troop campout has been scheduled for the middle of March at Windmill State park near Gibbon, to observe the annual sand hill crane migration.
