The Wakefield Trojan wrestling team traveled to Norfolk Catholic High School in Norfolk for the 2023 Class C-2 District wrestling tournament over last weekend.
Wakefield’s team faced some stiff competition, putting together 24 team points and finishing 15th in the field of teams. Battle Creek took first place with 205 team points, Bishop Neumann was second with 145.5 and Pierce took the third spot with 142 team points.
Coach Lucas Munter had this to say about the tournament:
“Well, we had four make it into the second day of districts, a freshman, two seniors, and a junior. Freshman Domingo Centino was one point away in a tough match with a Norfolk catholic kid. We wrestled tough had a lot of close matches. Unfortunately, Sam Chase was the only one that made it into the heartbreak round.”
He also had good things to say about junior Sam Chase, “Sam wrestled a tough heartbreak round match against Carl from hartington Cedar and it came down to the wire. I think he thought he had two at the end there and he didn't and kind of stopped wrestling.” Said Munter. “I guess that's why we always tell them to wrestle to the whistle.”
“Anyway, Sam's a tough kid and he'll be back there next year and there's no doubt will be in that spot again and will be a better wrestler next year. With freshman Domingo coming back I'm excited about the strength we have on that freshman group.”
With a few close calls, and some losses in the “heartbreak” round – the Wakefield team did not qualify any teammates for the State Tournament in Omaha this weekend, closing out their season for the year.
