The Crofton Speech team took fourth place as a team in a very competitive Mid-State conference tournament on Sat. March 1 in Battle Creek.
Junior Katie Neuharth earned the Conference Championship in informative speeches. Last year she made it to state but didn’t place. This year she is hopeful to make it all the way. “I’ve been motivated by my teammates and coaches to do so well this year, but at the end of the day, as long as I improve from last year, the season will have been worth it,” Wortmann said.
Junior Sophia Wortmann and Neuharth got fifth in duet. This duo is excited to get the shot to perform at state.“ Our goal is to make it to state, perform our best, and make people laugh. There is some very tough competition, but with the support of our teammates and coaches, I think we can do it.” Said Wortmann.
Senior Jack Schieffer got second place in entertainment and humorous, and Hess got fifth in poetry. In 6th place came senior Madelyn Loecker in informative and senior Rylie Arens in extemporaneous.
The OID, which consists of Grant Schieffer, Katie Neuharth, Jack Schieffer, Madelyn Loecker, and Sophia Wortmann, got third place.
The Crofton Speech Open House will take place on Sat, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. There will be deserts and Italian soda for a free will donation, which goes right back to the program. This is the team members’ last performance before districts on March 20 in Hartington.
